The police high command has been advised to create an Association of Nigeria Police Professionals comprising serving and retired officers to provide professional oversight for the force, increase its accountability and performance.
President, Association of industrial Safety and Security Operators of Nigeria , Dr. Ona Ekhomu, canvassed this idea at a retreat organized for the police high command and officials of the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.
He said the association, like its counterparts abroad, would provide a platform for synergy among police agencies, reward police officers and lobby for policy changes for effective policing.
Discussing a paper entitled, “Police Oversight Agencies in Nigeria: Prerequisites for Effectiveness” delivered by Prof. Etanbi Anemia at the Police retreat in Abuja, Ekhomu said the association would exhibit the inter-subjectivity needed to provide a proper oversight of police operations.
According to him, this body, which will draw its membership from sworn police officers, law enforcement agencies, military police units, the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs, Police Service Commission, the Economic and financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, the Federal Road safety Commission, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, private security agencies, among others, will foster cooperstion among police agencies and consequently improve policing in Nigeria…
